I've found that the most promoted step in reducing energy use is in changing from incandescent bulbs to flourescent bulbs. We use flourescent bulbs in only one lamp at our house and don't like the "flicker" at start, nor the color temperature of light that it gives off (bought at IKEA three years ago). But I seem to find that there are new developments and technologies with flourescent bulbs now and found this interesting resource for finding the right flourescent bulb:
