Post-Breakout Session - The Action/Ideas List

What to do now?

Campus safety undermines motivation to ride bicycles to school. Bicycles get confiscated, U-Locks are required, etc.

Green purchasing group - premium associated with buying recycled paper, double-sided printing, etc. If one group made a campus-wide recommendation that departments could follow on their own.

This message should reach international students by inviting student organizations and international students to these events.

What is the role of the University? There needs to be a campus forum, an inclusive area where international and all students can come together with faculty and administration to discuss the issues. What is the University's role in connecting with the city and state to implement their energy policies?

Push the University to put more sidewalks on Evans and University, as well as bike lanes, through supporting the city in these initiatives.

Revolving fund that holds money saved through efficiencies that can be reinvested in efficiencies.

Rented bicycles - extra bikes that facilities has.

Bike path access - DU bike paths don't connect to city bike paths.

Change the way that we educate students - we fall short in the way we educate students in green careers and other opportunities for them.

Solar-generated tuition credits.

Initiate/demystify the process of installing solar panels.

Change the way we make decisions and how we calculate the cost of things. How do we change our system of accounting? Sustainability council should offer some transparency in the way they're accounting for decisions in order for us to understand how we can make a difference.

Interdisciplinary dialog - why weren't there creative writers here to cover this? How is the community at DU going to be a voice for the people who don't have a voice in the community?

Need to think about the international connection as much as the local connection.

Alumni of DU were not involved in today's discussion - need them to be more involved.

Transportation (RTD) sticker needs to be available to non-traditional students as well.

Safety, reliability, and sustainability needs to be infused in the RTD culture.

Involving custodial staff in the discussion.

Dream big at DU - local, local, local; where will DU house new faculty? Where is local, affordable student housing?

Bikes

I strongly believe that DU could be made a far more bike friendly school.  It's disappointing that when I lock my bike up in the morning, it's usually the only one!  I think there could be incentives made; rather than methods of dissuasion implemented - U-Locks for example.  I think that the university could easily put energy forth in this regard and could have a positive impact on the community, environment and the student body (bike riders are generally healthier).
I hate it when I hear about change and global warming and everyone in the room drove their car.  I get frustrated when organizations try and throw money at solutions without looking at what's really going to make a difference.  I am hoping that DU is not in that boat.
