Must Read //
- WorldChanging: A Users Guide to the 21st Century (2006), Alex Steffen, ed.
- A compendium of articles touching on a variety of sustainability topics.
- "Filled with information about what is going on right now to create an environmentally and economically sustainable future-and what stands in opposition."
- An excellent, and "easily digestable", resource for dipping into any topic of interest or need, or for reading all the way through. The further resources at he end of each section are invaluable.
- Hope's Edge: The Next Diet for a Small Planet (2003), Frances Moore Lappe, Anna Lappe
- "Frances Moore Lappe and her daughter Anna bring us a new round of iconoclastic recommendations that break overwhelming issues down to a simple matter of personal choice. Hope's Edge presents many of the same issues of the original title, but it also provides a wealth of new discoveries and possibilities in this era of genetically engineered foods, worldwide famine, and growing rates of obesity-related health issues."
- Sand County Almanac (Outdoor Essays and Reflections) (1949), Aldo Leopold
- "A classic of nature writing, widely cited as one of the most influential nature books ever published."
- The quintessential elevation of environmental consciousness from naturalist observations
Recommended //
- MassiveChange (2004), Bruce Mau, Jennifer Leonard, and the Institute Without Boundaries, et.al.
- "Massive Change is a modern illustrated primer on the new inventions, technologies, and events that are affecting the human race worldwide. The book is a part of a broader research project by Bruce Mau Design intended to provoke debate and discussion about the future of design culture, broadly defined as the 'familiar objects and techniques that are transforming our lives.'"
- An interesting, and beautiful, book about a number of global issues. The most valuable elements are the expert interviews and perspectives.
- Silent Spring (1962), Rachel Carson
- The archetypical gateway to the environmental movement of the 1950's
- "The first shattering look at widespread ecological degradation and touched off an environmental awareness that still exists."
- The Cultural Creatives: How 50 Million People Are Changing the World (2001), Paul H. Ray, Sherry Ruth Anderson
- "Cultural Creative is a term coined by Ray and Anderson to describe people whose values embrace a curiosity and concern for the world, its ecosystem, and its peoples; an awareness of and activism for peace and social justice; and an openness to self-actualization through spirituality, psychotherapy, and holistic practices."
- An intersting look at the rising of the creative class
