Operating Systems //

  • Ubuntu Linux ($Free)
    • "Ubuntu is a community developed, linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the applications you need - a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more."
    • Main Use: With Ubuntu Desktop Edition you can surf the web, read email, create documents and spreadsheets, edit images and much more. Ubuntu has a fast and easy graphical installer right on the Desktop CD. On a typical computer the installation should take you less than 25 minutes.
    • The Server Edition - built on the solid foundation of Debian which is known for its robust server installations — has a strong heritage for reliable performance and predictable evolution.
    • Pros: Free, open-source, large user-base, easier to install than other Linux distributions.
    • Cons: Doesn't have drivers for all hardware (especially for laptops; desktops hardware is very well supported)
    • Comments: Linux powers over 50% of the webservers in the world and is based on proven (and continually tested) software. You can also downoad "live" discs to give it a try without installing anything! Give it a try!

  • Dynebolic ($Free)
    • "Dyne:bolic is a free multimedia studio in a live GNU/Linux CD"
    • Main use: Uses will be varied. This is a very complete suite of tools.
    • Pros: dynebolic offers a one stop solution for creative people who want to author content with free and open source tools. Distribution comes as an ISO file from which to burn your own CD-ROMS. License allows -- and ecourages -- users to further distribute the toolkit. CD boots live on PCs and can leave the hard drive and native operating system untouched.
    • Cons: Live booting CD may be a bit scary at first.
    • Comments: [From the website] You don't need to install anything, you don't even need an harddisk to run a whole free software operating system running out of the box on your PC! Download the ISO-image, burn your own CD, reboot your machine and you'll get back true love ;^)
dyne:bolic is shaped on the needs of media activists, artists and creatives as a practical tool for multimedia production: you can manipulate and broadcast both sound and video with tools to record, edit, encode and stream, having automatically recognized most device and peripherals: audio, video, TV, network cards, firewire, usb and more; all using only free software!
You can employ this operating system without the need to install anything, and if you want to run it from harddisk you just need to copy a directory: the easiest installation ever seen!
It is optimized to run on slower computers, turning them into a full media stations: the minimum you need is a pentium1 or k5 PC 64Mb RAM and IDE CD-ROM, or a modded XBOX game console -- and if you have more than one, you can easily do clusters.
